Integrated or freestanding?
This decides everything else, and it's usually decided for you by the kitchen.
Integrated fridge freezers hide behind a cabinet door that matches the rest of your units, so the appliance disappears into the run. They fit a standard 54cm to 55cm housing and the door panel attaches to the front. You lose some internal capacity to the cabinet, and they cost more for the same litres — you're paying for the seamless look.
Freestanding models stand on their own, come in wider bodies with more usable space for the money, and can go anywhere with enough ventilation. Widths run from 50cm slimline units for flats up to 91cm American-style. If you're replacing like for like in an existing gap, freestanding is almost always the simpler choice.
The split: 50/50, 60/40 or 70/30
The numbers are the proportion of fridge to freezer, and getting this wrong is the most common regret.
- 50/50 — equal halves. Right if you batch cook, freeze leftovers, or keep a lot of frozen veg and meat.
- 60/40 — more fridge than freezer. The most popular split in UK homes and the safe default for a family.
- 70/30 — fridge-dominant. For households that shop fresh several times a week and only freeze the basics.
Think about how you actually shop rather than how you'd like to. If your freezer is currently jammed and there's space in the fridge, buy 50/50 next time.
Frost free, low frost or manual defrost
Frost free (also sold as NoFrost) circulates cold air so ice never forms. You never defrost it. The compressor works slightly harder, and the moving air can dry unwrapped food a little faster — wrap things properly and you'll never notice.
Low frost slows ice build-up rather than eliminating it. You'll defrost occasionally instead of routinely.
Manual defrost is usually on cheaper or undercounter models. It means emptying the freezer and clearing ice once or twice a year. Fine on a small second freezer, tedious on your main one.
American style and side-by-side
American-style fridge freezers put fridge and freezer side by side behind two tall doors, typically 500 to 660 litres and around 91cm wide. Four-door models split the lower half into drawers, which is more useful than it sounds — a dedicated drawer at its own temperature handles fish, charcuterie or drinks without opening the main cabinet.
Two things to check before you fall for one. The width: 91cm needs a genuine 91cm gap plus clearance, and most kitchens don't have it. And the door swing: two wide doors need room to open fully or you can't get the shelves out.
Undercounter and larder
Undercounter units are around 82cm high and slot into a standard cabinet run. Ideal as a second fridge in a utility, or as the main one in a flat.
A larder fridge is all fridge — no ice box, no freezer compartment. Every litre is usable chilled space, which suits households with a separate freezer elsewhere. If you've been fighting for fridge space, a tall larder fridge plus a separate freezer beats a combined unit every time.
Freshness technology — what's real
Beyond the marketing, two things genuinely extend how long food lasts. Humidity-controlled drawers keep salad and herbs crisp for days longer than an ordinary crisper. And dedicated near-zero compartments — Liebherr calls it BioFresh — hold food just above freezing, where meat and fish keep for considerably longer than in the main cabinet.
Look at the noise rating too, quoted in decibels. Anything at 35dB or below is genuinely quiet, which matters enormously in an open-plan kitchen where you'll hear it every evening.

Before you order
- Measure height, width and depth — and the depth with the door open, if it sits near a wall or island.
- Check the door hinge — many models are reversible, but not all. Confirm before ordering if the appliance sits in a corner.
- Allow ventilation — freestanding units need a gap at the back and above. Boxing one in tightly shortens its life and raises running costs.
- Plan the route in — American styles are wide and heavy. Measure doorways, hallway corners and stair turns before delivery day.
- Let it stand before switching on — after transport, leave it upright for at least four hours so the refrigerant settles. Powering it up too soon can damage the compressor, and it isn't covered by warranty.

Questions we get asked
What size fridge freezer do I need?
A rough guide is 150 litres for two people, plus 50 litres for each additional person. A family of four is comfortable around 250 to 300 litres total. Buy slightly larger if you shop weekly rather than daily.
Is frost free worth paying for?
Yes on your main freezer. Defrosting is an unpleasant job and ice steals capacity you've paid for. On a small second freezer that rarely opens, manual defrost is perfectly liveable.
Can I convert an integrated model to freestanding?
No. Integrated units aren't finished on the sides or top and need the cabinet for support and airflow. Buy for the installation you actually have.
How long before I can switch it on?
At least four hours upright, and a full 24 if it was transported lying down. Then give it several hours to reach temperature before loading food in.
What does the energy rating actually save?
A fridge freezer runs continuously for fifteen years or more, so the rating compounds. The difference between a D and an A over that lifetime is typically a few hundred pounds — often more than the price gap between the two models.
