A Wine Cooler Is Not a Small Fridge
The difference matters more than people expect. A fridge runs at 3-5°C, which is far too cold for almost every wine, and it runs dry — the low humidity slowly shrinks corks, lets air in, and oxidises the bottle. It also vibrates, and vibration disturbs the sediment in anything worth keeping.
A wine cooler holds a steady 5-18°C depending on the setting, keeps humidity around 50-70%, damps vibration, and shields the bottles from light. If you keep more than a few bottles at a time, it is the difference between wine that's ready to drink and wine that's quietly deteriorating in the garage.

Step One: Built-In or Freestanding? Get This Wrong and You'll Kill It
This is the single most expensive mistake in this category, and it happens constantly.
Freestanding wine coolers vent heat from the back and sides. They need air gaps around them — typically several centimetres at the rear and sides, and clear space above. Slide one into a tight run of kitchen units and it will overheat, run constantly, fail early, and the manufacturer will decline the warranty claim because it wasn't installed as specified.
Built-in and integrated wine coolers vent forwards, through a grille in the plinth or the front of the unit. They are designed to sit flush in a cabinet run with no air gaps at all. The Haier HAKWBD60UK integrated 44-bottle at £760 and the Smeg Linea 45cm compact built-in at £1,889 are both this type.
The rule: if it's going into a kitchen unit, it must be a built-in or integrated model. If it's going in a garage, utility, dining room or a gap at the end of a run with air around it, freestanding is fine and cheaper.
Step Two: How Many Bottles Do You Actually Need?
Bottle counts are quoted using a standard Bordeaux 750ml bottle, laid flat, packed to the manufacturer's ideal. Real cellars aren't like that.
Burgundy and Champagne bottles are fatter — noticeably so. If you drink a lot of either, assume you'll fit 20-30% fewer bottles than the label claims. A quoted 46-bottle cooler holding a mixed collection realistically takes somewhere around 35.
Rough guidance on sizing:
- Up to 20 bottles — for drinking, not keeping. A week or two ahead, plus a few things chilling. The CDA 30cm 20-bottle at £399 fits a standard slimline gap.
- 40-50 bottles — the sweet spot for most households. Enough to buy by the case and have both reds and whites at temperature. The CDA 60cm 46-bottle at £679 or the Haier integrated 44-bottle.
- 100+ bottles — genuine collecting territory, with long-term ageing in mind. The Liebherr WPgbi5273 Vinidor 104-bottle at £5,146 and the Liebherr WPsd5252 155-bottle at £4,299 sit here.
Buy bigger than you think. Nobody has ever complained that their wine cooler was too large. Plenty of people replace a 20-bottle unit within two years.
Step Three: One Zone, Two Zones, or Multi-Temperature?
This decides whether the cooler serves your wine or just stores it.
Single zone holds the whole cabinet at one temperature. Perfect if you're storing for the long term — around 12°C is the classic cellar temperature for everything. Also fine if you drink mostly one colour.
Dual zone splits the cabinet in two with independent controls, so you can hold whites at 8°C in one half and reds at 16°C in the other. This is what most people actually want, because it means every bottle is ready to pour without a stint in the fridge or an hour on the worktop. The CDA 60cm double door at £729 and the Haier integrated are both dual zone.
Multi-temperature cabinets, like Liebherr's Vinidor range, give you two or three independently controlled zones that can each be set anywhere across the full range — so you can run one as a serving zone, one as a cellar, and change your mind later.
Serving temperatures worth knowing
- Sparkling and Champagne — 6-8°C
- Light, crisp whites — 8-10°C
- Full-bodied whites and rosé — 10-13°C
- Light reds — 12-14°C
- Full-bodied reds — 15-18°C
- Long-term storage, any colour — a steady 12°C
Note the top of that list: "room temperature" for red wine dates from houses that were 16°C in winter. A modern living room at 21°C makes red taste flabby and alcoholic. A dual-zone cooler set to 16°C is a genuine improvement in how your wine tastes, not an affectation.
Step Four: Compressor or Thermoelectric?
Compressor coolers work like a fridge and can hold temperature regardless of how warm the room gets. They're what you need for anything over about 20 bottles, and for garages and conservatories where ambient temperature swings. Slight vibration and a faint hum are the trade-off. Nearly every model we sell is compressor-based.
Thermoelectric coolers have no compressor, so no vibration and near-silent running — but they can only pull the temperature down a limited amount below the room, which makes them unreliable in a warm kitchen and useless in summer in a conservatory. Only found on small units.
For a kitchen or utility, compressor every time.
Step Five: The Details That Separate Good From Cheap
- UV-protective glass. Light degrades wine. Tinted or UV-filtered double glazing is standard on better units and worth checking on cheaper ones — especially if the cooler faces a window.
- Wooden shelving. Beech or oak shelves cradle bottles, damp vibration and slide out smoothly. Wire shelves rattle and scratch labels.
- Reversible or fixed hinge. Check which side the door opens before you order — our Smeg SCV115G at £2,359, for instance, is a right-hand hinge. In a corner or beside a wall, this matters enormously.
- Noise. Quoted in dB. If the cooler is going in an open-plan kitchen or a dining room, treat anything above the low 40s as noticeable.
- Carbon filter and humidity control. Present on serious storage cabinets, absent on drinks coolers. Only matters if you're keeping wine for years.

Before You Order: Five Checks
- Built-in or freestanding. Confirm which the model is, and never build a freestanding unit into a cabinet run.
- Aperture width and depth. 30cm, 45cm and 60cm are the common widths. Measure the opening, not the old appliance.
- Hinge side. Check it opens away from the wall or corner it's going next to.
- Ambient temperature. Garages and conservatories swing hard. Check the model's climate class covers where you're putting it.
- Bottle shapes. If you drink Champagne or Burgundy, size up from the quoted capacity.

Can I keep wine in a normal fridge instead?
For a few days, yes. Longer than that and the cold, dry air dries the cork and dulls the flavour. A fridge runs at 3-5°C, which is below the serving temperature of every wine except sparkling.
What temperature should a wine cooler be set to?
Around 12°C for long-term storage of any colour. If you have dual zones, roughly 8-10°C for whites and 15-16°C for reds gives you bottles that are ready to pour.
Can I build a freestanding wine cooler into my units?
No. Freestanding models vent from the back and sides and will overheat in an enclosed space, which shortens their life and invalidates the warranty. You need a built-in or integrated model, which vents forwards.
Does 46 bottles really mean 46 bottles?
Only with standard Bordeaux bottles packed to the manufacturer's layout. Champagne and Burgundy bottles are wider, so a mixed collection typically fills a cooler 20-30% sooner than the quoted figure.
Single zone or dual zone?
Single zone if you're storing wine to age, since one steady temperature suits everything. Dual zone if you're storing wine to drink, so reds and whites are each held at their own serving temperature.
Are wine coolers expensive to run?

Can I put one in the garage?
Check the climate class first. Many domestic units are rated for a minimum ambient of around 10-16°C, and an unheated UK garage drops well below that in winter, which can stop the cooler regulating properly.
How long do wine coolers last?
Ten years or more with proper ventilation. Poor installation — a freestanding unit boxed into a cabinet — is by far the most common cause of early failure.
