A wine cooler is one of those purchases where the specification sheet tells you very little about whether you will be happy with it. Two units can both say "46 bottles, dual zone" and behave completely differently in a real kitchen.
This guide covers what actually matters when choosing one for a UK home: where it goes, how many zones you need, why the bottle count is optimistic, and which features are worth paying for.
First, a distinction worth understanding
The terms get used loosely, but there is a real difference between them.
A wine cooler or wine fridge is designed to bring wine to drinking temperature and hold it there. Most run somewhere between 5°C and 18°C.
A wine cabinet is designed for ageing. It holds a stable temperature around 10–12°C, manages humidity so corks do not dry out, filters UV light, and keeps vibration to a minimum. If you are laying bottles down for years rather than weeks, this is what you want.
And a domestic fridge is neither. It runs at 4–5°C, which is too cold for almost everything except sparkling wine, and the air inside is very dry — which dries out corks and eventually lets air into the bottle.
Zones: how many do you actually need?
This is the specification people most often get wrong, in both directions.
Single zone
One temperature throughout. Ideal if you drink predominantly one style, or if you are using it purely for storage at a single ageing temperature. Simpler, usually cheaper, and often quieter. Dual zone
Two independently controlled compartments — typically reds in the upper section at 14–18°C and whites or sparkling in the lower at 6–12°C. This is the right choice for most households, because most households drink both. Multi-temperature

The bottle count is optimistic. Plan for less.
Every manufacturer quotes capacity based on standard Bordeaux 750ml bottles, stacked in the most efficient possible arrangement. Real cellars are not like that.
Burgundy and Rhône bottles are noticeably wider. Champagne bottles are wider still and often taller. Once you have a few of those in there, a quoted 46-bottle cooler might realistically hold 35.
The practical rule: if you want to store 40 bottles, buy something rated for 50 or more. And if you are the sort of person buying a wine cooler at all, assume your collection will grow. Almost nobody regrets buying the larger unit.
Freestanding, built-in or integrated
This decides where it can physically go, and it is not a detail you can change later.
Freestanding units vent from the back or sides and need air space around them. They cannot be pushed into a run of cabinetry — trapped heat will make the compressor work harder, shorten its life and push up running costs. The Smeg SCV115G 60cm Freestanding Classic is a handsome standalone piece.
Built-in and integrated units vent forward through a plinth grille, so they can sit flush under a worktop or within tall cabinetry. This is what you want in a fitted kitchen. One thing people forget: check the hinge side. A door that opens into a wall or an island is an irritation you will notice every single time.
Compressor or thermoelectric?
Compressor cooling works like a fridge. It is powerful, holds temperature reliably regardless of how warm the room gets, and can reach lower temperatures. It produces some noise and a small amount of vibration. Almost all serious wine coolers use it.
Thermoelectric cooling has no compressor, so it is near-silent and vibration-free. The limitation is that it can only cool to a certain number of degrees below the surrounding room temperature. In a kitchen that hits 28°C in summer, a thermoelectric unit may simply be unable to reach its target. Fine for a cool utility room, risky in a warm south-facing kitchen.
The features that genuinely matter
UV protection. Light degrades wine, and sunlight through a glass door will do real damage over months. Look for UV-filtered or tinted glass, or a solid door if the unit sits somewhere bright.
Humidity control. Around 50–70% keeps corks supple. Too dry and the cork shrinks, letting air in. This matters for long-term storage and barely at all if bottles are drunk within a few months.
Low vibration. Constant vibration disturbs sediment and is thought to interfere with the slow chemical changes of ageing. Good cabinets isolate the compressor. Again — critical for ageing, largely irrelevant for a drinking stock.
Shelving. Full-extension wooden or wood-fronted runners let you pull a shelf right out to read labels without shuffling bottles. Cheap wire shelves that only half-extend become annoying quickly.
Noise level. Check the decibel rating if the unit is going in an open-plan kitchen or anywhere near a living space. Anything around 38–42dB is unobtrusive; above that you will hear it in a quiet room.

That table is the argument for dual zone in one picture. A single-zone cabinet set at 12°C serves nothing at its best — it is a compromise between everything.

Before you order
- Decide whether you are storing to drink or storing to age — that single answer drives everything else.
- Count your current bottles, then add at least 25%.
- Confirm freestanding versus built-in, and check the ventilation requirement.
- Check the hinge side against the room.
- Measure the aperture height, width and depth, including the door and handle.
- Check the noise rating if it sits near a living space.
- Think about where the nearest socket is.
Get those right and a wine cooler is one of the more satisfying appliances you can own. Get the ventilation or the hinge wrong and it is a daily irritation in an expensive box.
